Save yourself a headache

As a general rule, I have found that when you are tracking anything vocals or instrument after you are done with 3 takes begin to critique the tracks. The goal is to create a best version by comping segments as they work through the song. By doing this I have found that if you take a break from the performing part, then you can get a good sense of what you are getting when you are recording in the way in which you are recording it. IMPORTANT POINT. Do not use plugins at this point, it will only color the situation for you too soon.

Wait a few days, come back and re-track again as noted above. This way you can obtain a nice option of approaches that has made the cut. I have found this to take the headache away when it comes down to committing to the mixing phase.
